At 1.10pm this afternoon (May 22, 2012) the driver of the 12.18pm First Great Western London Paddington to Taunton service reported hitting a vehicle at the Ufton Nervet level crossing.
The vehicle was identified as a motor scooter. Tragically, the rider of the scooter died at the scene.
Emergency services attended the scene and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch was notified. British Transport Police is not treating the death as suspicious as early investigations appear to show that the level crossing equipment was in working order.
Following the news, the Rt Hon John Redwood MP made the following statement: "I was saddened today to hear of another accident at the Ufton Nervet railway crossing. I understand a scooter rider was knocked down and killed by the oncoming Paddington to Taunton train.
I send my condolences to the rider’s family. It will come as a great shock to lose a loved one so suddenly like that.
The train was brought to a halt without any injury to people on board. Preliminary reports suggest that the crossing was working as it should. I have asked to be kept informed, and will of course take action should those involved wish me to assist them."
