West Berkshire Council’s contractors will shortly begin a project to replace the traffic signal system on Burghfield Bridge.
The existing traffic signal system is life-expired, having been originally installed in the 1990s. The Council will be installing a new system to modern standards which will be better able to respond to the traffic on the road. To do this they need to install new ducting and cabling and replace all the electronic components and traffic detectors.
In order to safely carry out this work, the Council will need to temporarily close the bridge to traffic between 9.30 am and 4.00 pm from Tuesday 27th August until Saturday 31st August, while work takes place on the bridge itself. During this time, traffic will need to identify a suitable alternative route. The bridge will reopen at 4.00pm daily. Access across the bridge will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists during the closure, although cyclists may be required to dismount as they pass the working area. If our contractors make good progress it may be possible to shorten the duration of the closure.
The remaining work will take a further four weeks, but will be carried out using temporary traffic signals with the road open to traffic as normal.
