Wokingham Borough Council is undertaking a major scheme to replace age expired lamp columns and lanterns throughout the Borough. Passing a column’s age limit leads to weakness in the columns themselves which impacts on the potential safety of them.
The design of modern street lighting lanterns directs the light onto the road and footway. This reduces unnecessary “upward” light pollution and spillage into adjacent properties and allows a street light to use efficient and lower wattage lamps than older designs.
The Council has almost completed the replacement of 385 lighting columns and/or lanterns in residential areas and are also currently replacing 231 main road columns. So far, the comments received have generally been supportive and we welcome any views, either positive or negative so that we can shape future lighting specifications and policy.
